The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was adopted in 1966 and entered into force in 1976.
As the ICCPR, its first article reaffirms the right to self-determination as the cornerstone of the whole human rights system together with the right to non-discrimination. In relation to other rights set forth in the Covenant, the following may here recalled:
- the right of everyone to the opportunity to gain his living by work which he freely chooses or accepts (Art. 6);
- the right of everyone to the enjoyment of just and favourable conditions of work (Art. 7);
- the right of everyone to social security (Art. 8);
- the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing (Art. 11);
- the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (Art. 12);
- the right of everyone to education (Art. 13).
