The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was adopted in 1966 and entered into force in 1976.

As the ICCPR, its first article reaffirms the right to self-determination as the cornerstone of the whole human rights system together with the right to non-discrimination. In relation to other rights set forth in the Covenant, the following may here recalled:

  • the right of everyone to the opportunity to gain his living by work which he freely chooses or accepts (Art. 6);
  • the right of everyone to the enjoyment of just and favourable conditions of work (Art. 7);
  • the right of everyone to social security (Art. 8);
  • the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing (Art. 11);
  • the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (Art. 12);
  • the right of everyone to education (Art. 13).
