Third Parties Reports on Western Sahara

The Department of State of the United States – Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor – has issued a report on human rights conditions in Western Sahara.

The report summarises the history of the Western Sahara region and the political developments that occurred after Spain withdrew. It covers also the recent events that have led to the application of the new Constitution of Morocco to the Western Sahara and the consequent participation of nine parliamentarians to represent the region in the new Parliament.

More information are available in the Report: Western Sahara Human Rights Report 2012. Other information can be found in the report that the Department of State issued on Morocco: Morocco Human Rights Report 2012.

Another significant report on human rights and Western Sahara was published by the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights in 2013. It was compiled from testimony taken by the RFK Center during its high-level delegation to the region in August 2012. See Nowhere To Turn.

The RFK continues to monitor the human rights situation in WS. Recently, it has published the monitoring reports related to 2015: First 2015 Report (Jan-Jun);

The RFK together with a number of NGOs is also involved in reporting activities in order to submit information to UN Human Rights Committees that are dealing with the human situation in Western Sahara. Recently, for instance, it has sponsored a report addressing the Kingdom of Morocco’s implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara, to be reviewed by the Human Rights Committee in 2016: Observations and Topics on ICCPR for 2016.
